Michael R. Bromwich, Senior Counsel

Michael R. Bromwich is a litigator who specializes in internal investigations and the representation of companies and individuals in white-collar criminal investigations and related regulatory matters.  He has led major internal investigations for companies and their audit committees, special committees and special litigation committees. 

Over the course of a career that has spanned more than 30 years, Mr. Bromwich has served as a federal prosecutor, a special prosecutor, the Inspector General of the Department of Justice, and as the country’s top offshore drilling regulator following the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. He has been called on by public corporations, private companies, federal, state, and local governments, Cabinet Secretaries, and the President of the United States to deal with issues and problems of great private and public significance.  He has successfully built, reformed, and managed two major public agencies and assisted the management of numerous companies and government agencies by conducting effective and efficient investigations, diagnosing problems, and recommending sound solutions.  

In addition to his work at Robbins Russell, Mr. Bromwich is the Managing Principal of The Bromwich Group, a strategic consulting firm that specializes in independent monitoring, crisis management, public relations, offshore energy, and law enforcement. He is also a Non-Resident Senior Adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and a member of the Lawyers’ Committee for the Innocence Project.

Representative matters include:

  • Represented a Special Committee in determining the causes of a major pipeline rupture that caused multiple deaths.

  • Represented an Audit Committee of a financial institution in an investigation of the alleged improper use of certain financial instruments.

  • Represented a Special Litigation Committee in an investigation of alleged unlawful payments to groups in South America.

  • Represented a company in connection with investigating the unauthorized trading activities of a company employee.

  • Represented a major financial institution in a series of internal investigations into allegations of misconduct by individuals, including high-level executives.

  • Represented the City of Houston in conducting a comprehensive investigation into all aspects of the operations of the Houston Police Department Crime Lab

  • Represented the State of Delaware in a Department of Justice investigation into the adequacy of medical and mental health care provided to inmates in state institutions.

  • Represented a major accounting firm in a criminal investigation into allegations of accounting fraud.

  • Represented an energy company in an investigation into potential environmental crimes committed in connection with an accident.

  • Represented a Hawaiian bank in a highly-publicized criminal fraud investigation.

  • Represented a hedge fund in connection with late trading and market timing investigations conducted by the New York Attorney General and the SEC.

  • Represented a major financial institution in a bribery and gratuity investigation.
